MOQ Guide — Minimum Order Quantities for Indian Handicraft Manufacturers

One of the most common questions from new international buyers is: "What is the minimum order quantity for Indian handicrafts?"

The answer is: it depends. MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) varies by manufacturer, product type, customisation level, and order structure. This guide explains everything you need to know — and how to start small even if your budget is limited.

What is MOQ and Why Does it Exist?

MOQ is the minimum number of units a manufacturer will produce and sell in a single order. Manufacturers set MOQs because:

  • Production efficiency: Below a certain quantity, the per-unit cost of setup, labour, and materials makes an order unprofitable.
  • Material sourcing: Raw materials are often purchased in minimum quantities.
  • Customisation cost: Custom colours, designs, or packaging require setup time that only becomes economical above a certain quantity.

Understanding why MOQs exist helps you negotiate them intelligently.

Typical MOQ Ranges by Product Type

Product Category Typical MOQ (Standard) Typical MOQ (Custom/OEM)
Wooden figurines & sculptures 50–100 pcs/design 200 pcs/design
Brass figurines & decor 50–100 pcs/design 200 pcs/design
Coconut shell products 100–200 pcs/design 300 pcs/design
Wooden keychains & small gifts 200–500 pcs/design 500 pcs/design
Hand-painted wall art 25–50 pcs/design 100 pcs/design
Wooden boxes & trays 50–100 pcs/design 150 pcs/design
Eco-friendly gift sets 50 sets 100 sets
Mixed assortment (multiple SKUs) 100 pcs total 200 pcs total

At Vidhiraj Global Impex: Our standard MOQ is 50 pieces per design for most products, with a minimum order value of USD 300. Mixed assortments of 100+ pieces total are welcome.

What Affects MOQ?

1. Product Complexity

Highly detailed, labour-intensive products (large carved sculptures, multi-piece sets) have lower MOQs per design but higher per-unit prices. Simple products like wooden keychains have higher MOQs because they are cheaper per unit.

2. Customisation Level

Standard (catalogue) products → Lower MOQ. The manufacturer already has the design, moulds, and materials ready.

Custom colours / finishes → Slightly higher MOQ. The manufacturer needs to prepare custom dyes or materials.

Full OEM (new design) → Higher MOQ. New tooling, design development, and production setup justifies a minimum run.

3. Manufacturer Type

Direct manufacturers like Vidhiraj can offer lower MOQs than trading companies because they control production directly. Trading companies often aggregate orders across factories and may impose higher MOQs.

4. Your Relationship with the Supplier

Established buyers with a track record of regular orders often negotiate lower MOQs over time. New buyers are typically quoted standard MOQs.

How to Start with Small Orders

If you are a new buyer and the standard MOQ feels high, here are proven strategies:

Strategy 1: Mixed Assortment Order

Instead of ordering 100 pieces of one design, order 10–20 pieces each across 5–10 designs. Most manufacturers will accept a mixed assortment if the total order value meets the minimum.

Strategy 2: Start with Samples

Order 1–5 pieces of 10–20 designs as samples. Test which products sell in your market, then place a larger focused order on proven bestsellers.

Strategy 3: Order Standard Designs (No Customisation)

Skip the custom branding on your first order. Standard catalogue products have lower MOQs. Once you know what sells, introduce custom branding on your second order.

Strategy 4: Partner with Another Buyer

Co-sourcing — splitting an order with another buyer in your market who wants similar products — allows both parties to meet the MOQ while each taking a smaller quantity.

Sample Orders vs. Bulk Orders

Sample Order Bulk Order
Quantity 1–5 pcs/design 50–500+ pcs/design
Pricing Retail or near-retail Wholesale (20–60% less)
Customisation Usually not available Available above MOQ
Lead time 5–10 days 30–45 days
Purpose Quality verification Stock for sale

Sample costs are often credited against your first bulk order above a certain value threshold. Ask your supplier about their sample credit policy.
